GhostSquare — nine numbers, one of them doesn't count

A daily logic puzzle. Three guesses. Pure deduction.

GhostSquare is a free daily logic puzzle. The digits 1 to 9 hide face down in a 3x3 grid, and one of them is a ghost: the sums printed on the edges only count the real digits. Because all nine digits add up to 45, the row sums reveal which digit is the ghost; the puzzle is deducing where it hides. Wrong accusations turn a real digit face up and cost one of three guesses.

How do you play GhostSquare?

Tap a square, then tap numbers on the pad to pencil notes like sudoku. When you have worked out where the ghost hides, drop the ghost marker on that square and press Catch The Ghost. If you accuse a real number it flips face up, which helps your deduction but costs one of your three guesses.

What is the trick?

The numbers 1 through 9 add up to 45. The edge sums skip the ghost, so adding the three row sums and subtracting from 45 tells you which digit is the ghost. Finding which square it haunts takes more work: a full line of three real digits sums between 6 and 24, a line containing the ghost holds only two real digits, and every digit appears exactly once in the grid.

Does it ever require guessing?

No. Every daily board is generated so that the six edge sums determine the ghost's square uniquely, which means every puzzle can be solved by pure logic without spending a single guess. Difficulty varies through the week from easy to hard, and the first week serves only easy and medium puzzles.

When does the puzzle reset?

A new puzzle arrives at midnight in your local timezone. Everyone in the world gets the same board on the same calendar date, so results are always comparable with friends, and the share text never spoils the answer.

Is GhostSquare free?

Yes. GhostSquare is free, has no ads and needs no account. It runs in any web browser. Your streak and stats are stored on your device, and practice boards never affect them.
